The four principal moon phases

The Moon takes about 29.5 days to cycle from one new moon to the next. The four principal phases mark the quarter-points of that cycle and are the moments most calendars and almanacs list.

• 🌑New moon — the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun and is not visible.
• 🌓First quarter — half the disk is lit; the Moon is high in the evening sky.
• 🌕Full moon — the whole disk is lit and the Moon rises around sunset.
• 🌗Last quarter — the other half is lit; the Moon rises after midnight.

The next full moon and new moon are shown in the phase card, and the “Upcoming full & new moons” table lists the next several of each. All times are converted to your timezone.
